The Battle for Sfakia - Battlefield 2/Forgotten Hope 2 level

This is my first completed map for the Battlefield 2 modification Forgotten Hope 2. It is based on the Allied retreat to the small coastal town of Sfakia during the German invasion of Crete in May 1941. I designed the map by researching the terrain using Google Earth and local maps and researching the historical battle and town using a variety of websites. The buildings and objects that I used in the map were all built from examples seen in old photographs of the town by fellow Forgotten Hope developers. To construct the level I shaped the terrain, textured it and assigned areas different materials depending on the type of ground. I then had to place all of the static objects and build up the map's under- and over-growth vegetation before placing the control points that the teams would fight over and giving them appropriate points weightings. The map has proved to be very popular in the first public release of Forgotten Hope 2 with a selection of online game servers running both the 64-player and infantry-only 16-player versions of the map 24/7. In early January 2008 Forgotten Hope 2 achieved 4th place in Moddb.com's 2007 Mod of the Year Awards as voted for by the players (Link - see page 4).
